Old Sweetedge Biographies
The name describes the feel of this acoustic based trio. Muz Murray and Della Perrett’s previous band was the reggae/ funk jazz fusion - Rhythm Collision while Simon Cunningham played all over the world with Los Hombres Inglese. Della is more usually seen playing tenor sax but she is returning now to her first instrument - her guitar. She was originally a self taught classical guitarist but she has written songs most of her life, having absorbed the spirit of a wide range of influential singers.
Della writes the songs for Sweetedge, inspired by a brute honesty, commenting on the often-greyer shades of life between black and white, highlighting and challenging taboos and boundaries. However, this is far from a navel staring affair. Whilst people can hopefully identify with the subject matter, the songs are highly accessible and catchy, often leaving much space for the listener’s own imagination. They are potentially highly provocative and moving, dancing between extremes of sensitivity and assertive driving rhythm.
Della says "I empty out my brain and cut and paste! Much is cheeky or tongue in cheek, some very sexually charged. It’s sometimes fun to be rude with words, without falling back on cheap shots and swearing. Aspects hit you between your eyes - but all can be enjoyed by people on a number of levels."
Muz and Simon are highly instrumental in directing, moulding and developing these songs with the ‘sweetness’ and ‘edge’ they deserve. Simon brings his unique percussive style with his unconventional African/Indian drum kit driving the often uncommon, shifting rhythm. Muz and Simon show impeccable dynamics and are highly responsive to the emotional politics Sweetedge’s songs express. The band’s strengths lie in its contrast and variety whilst still having a strong identity and continuum of its own.
Based around the prolific song writing of Della Perrett, this acoustic trio is inspired by a variety of musical styles, from African to funk to country with a twist. Drummer, Simon Cunningham’s multicultural rhythms exploit the quirkiness of the message of Sweetedge while Muz Murray provides a solid foundation on his 5 string bass. Together they develop a sound that is exciting and challenging. The three partners in crime offer a contrast between extreme sensitivity and a sense of what is not included but implied - to boldly and provocatively ‘speak the unspeakable’. The overall tone is delivered by Della’s soulful and uncompromising voice. She likes to sing as if playing her saxophone, an instrument she regrets not being able to play live whilst actually singing and playing guitar!
